Lubhyathi Rangarajan

Research Fellow

Lubhyathi Rangarajan is a Research Fellow at SOAS. She holds a BA LLB (Hons) from Symbiosis Law School, Pune (2010) and an LLM from University of California, Berkeley School of Law (2013).

She was a founding member at Project 39A, National Law University Delhi (NLU Delhi), where she represented prisoners on death row before appellate courts in India. She was on Forbes India's 30 under 30 list for her work in criminal justice and death penalty, and is a TEDx speaker. 

 

In 2020, she led the creation of India’s first public database on the use of sedition, hosted on Article-14, a digital media platform. This data was cited in 5 petitions before the Supreme Court of India challenging the constitutionality of sedition, and covered by The Washington Post, CNN’s Fareed Zakaria GPS, and the BBC Network, among other international and domestic media. She was a panelist on NDTV Reality Check with Sreenivasan Jain, Al Jazeera English, CNBC 18 and interviewed for podcasts with Suno India and News Laundry for her work on sedition. 

 

Between 2021 and 2023, she was a key member on a SOAS-NLU Delhi partnership that set up the Joint LLM/MA in Environmental Justice in South Asia, commencing September 2024. She also enabled the production of NLU Delhi's first podcast series with SOAS, on climate justice, hosted by Kunal Purohit, an award winning investigative journalist in India. 

 

She is on the Editorial Board at Article-14, and has bylines in Scroll.in, The Hindu and India Cable. She is interesting in working through complex questions that face our society with collaborators in academia, design, tech, and media.
